The contribution stage is usually a relatively quiet period for organizers—a chance to prep for intern announcements and the internship kick-off. But this time around felt a lot more eventful than previous cohorts. One highlight was finally seeing the Professional Skills feature in action. That feature was introduced to help projects that typically receive fewer applicants find contributors with the right skill sets. This round, we saw that goal realized, and it was genuinely exciting to witness.
We’re also currently working on intern selection vetting, which is one of the most hands-on phases for organizers. It’s the point where we review intern selection and check for potential time conflicts. It’s detailed work, but incredibly rewarding—especially when we start to see the intern cohort take shape.
One thing that stood out this time around was how quickly some communities moved through their selections, while others needed more time or clarification. I found myself having more back-and-forth conversations than usual, especially when it came to navigating edge cases and questions around applicant availability. But honestly, I didn’t mind—it’s always interesting to hear mentors’ reasoning and get a closer look at how each mentoring community thinks about applicant fit.
Overall, even with the added activity, it’s been energizing. Seeing the professional skills filter actually help less-visible projects attract skilled applicants was such a win. It reminded me of how even small improvements to the platform or process can have a real, tangible impact.
I’m looking forward to seeing this cohort come together and watching how these applicants grow into interns. That transformation is always the best part.
