This month marks a milestone for me – it’s my 10th Outreachy report! Who knew someone who used to write maybe once a year would find such joy in writing these monthly updates? But here I am, ten reports deep, and still excited to share my Outreachy journey.
Internship activity was relatively quiet in May. We accepted 35 talented interns into the Outreachy program, and as always, it’s incredibly rewarding to welcome new faces and empower them to contribute to open source projects.
This lull, however, provided a valuable opportunity for some strategic thinking. With Outreachy’s increasing need for fundraising efforts, I wanted to explore ways to better showcase the amazing work our interns achieve. Looking back at our incredible alumni and their projects, I realized we’re sitting on a treasure trove of untold stories.
Seeing how Outreachy has nurtured careers and encouraged personal growth journeys for our interns truly emphasizes the program’s importance. These are stories that deserve to be heard, stories that demonstrate the undeniable impact of Outreachy. I’m genuinely excited to learn about them and share them.
However, in my pursuit of these inspiring stories, I’ve noticed a tendency to overlook my own experiences. I often fall into the trap of thinking my story isn’t interesting enough, filtering myself out of the equation. But I’m starting to recognize that overlooking my own journey does a disservice to myself and others. There’s value in sharing our stories, both the challenges and successes.
I look forward to writing more about the incredible work of our interns, past and present, and acknowledging the immense impact of the Outreachy program.
